Activities of the MFL Women's Committee

Helping Our Women's Shelters

Our Women's Committee is collecting those sample unused toiletries that we all receive when we stay in hotels. We have arranged for a basket to be place in the Union Centre Club 1919 where you can drop these items off when you are in the Union Centre Building. Items will be donated to Womens Shelters in our communities.

Child Care

The Manitoba Federation of Labour Women's Committee commends the Manitoba Government for the progressive leadership they have provided in reaching a substantive child care agreement with Ottawa. We are pleased to see the principles of accountability, quality, universality and accessibility laid out in the agreement and the commitment to ensuring that funding for new spaces will be earmarked for non-profit, community-based care.

While we still have a great deal of work that needs to be done, this agreement and the one with Saskatchewan and Ottawa have created momentum in achieving the pan-Canadian child care system that families need.

Stop Sweat Shop Abuse

The No Sweat Campaign* initiative deals with the issues of sweatshops including: What is a sweatshop? Ethical shopping, child labour, No Sweat municipal policies and toys made in justice.

The Workplace Procurement Campaign encourages and educates union leaders to include no sweat purchasing in their collective agreements. You will find model clauses for collective bargaining, model policies for collective bargaining, a workplace survey, purchasing policies for +municipalities and information on union-made uniforms.

Responsible Investment can help end sweatshop abuses. Union members, union finance officers and pension fund trustees can play a role in putting an end to worker exploitation by considering labour practices in the investment decision-making process and by engaging the corporations in which they invest to encourage adherence to international labour standards.
