Youth WCB Advocates Trained

Workers of Tomorrow focuses on most at risk group.

The workers most susceptable to workplace injuries are young workers. Reducing injuries among that group is the goal of the Workers of Tomorrow Safety Center.

Their latest initiative towards that goal is the training of youth workers compensation advocates. In May, the first group of 'students' completed an in-depth Level 1 WCB advocates course held by the Workers of Tomorrow Safety Centre. The course graduates are now able to work with their co-workers to solve problems related to reporting injuries to the Workers Compensation Board (WCB), filing claims, benefit entitlements as well as getting proper and timely medical treatment.

Brian Campbell and Ken Kalturnyk, the workshop leaders were pleased with the level of participation and interaction. Due to the 'students' active involvement in the learning and their knowledge of workers' injuries, they were able to fully explore the effects of decisions made by adjudicators and case managers at the WCB.

Participants also had the benefit of guest presenters from the medical community. Doctor Allan Kraut of the MFL Occupational Health Center provided an overview of basic medical terminology that advocates experience when reviewing a worker's file. They also met with Doctor Mitch Cosman, chief medical advisor to the WCB who explained the relationship of adjudication used for complex medical issues as well as how WCB doctors provide advice and understanding to case managers.

During June, the Safety Center will be providing other courses on WHMIS, Stress and Violence and a basic Health and Safety course for joint committee members and activists. During that time Brian and Ken will be preparing for a Level 2 WCB Advocates course which explores the many issues involved with preparing for and appealing negative decisions made on an injured worker's claim.

Information on these and other offerings can be obtained by contacting the Safety Center at 3 - 1680 Notre Dame Avenue, phone 992-2988.
