Canada's Highest Honour for Muriel Smith

Former Manitoba NDP cabinet minister named Officer of the Order of Canada.

On December 28, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, announced that Muriel Smith was among those people being named an Officer of the Order of Canada. The statement said that Smith was being accorded the honour because of her efforts in promoting social justice in Canada and around the world, notably as a leader and as a long-time volunteer with local, national and international organizations.

Muriel Smith and the other new recipients of the Order of Canada will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date. The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service in various fields of human endeavour. It is Canada's highest honour for lifetime achievement.

In October, Smith, a former cabinet minister and Deputy Premier of Manitoba, was one of six women recipients of the 2007 Governor General's Awards. Earlier story.
