Relive Highlights of 1919 Strike

Picture from 1919 strike

Ninety years ago, 30,000 men and women left their jobs to protest for better wages, and the improvement of their working conditions. The Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 was one of the most influential strikes in Canadian history.

Next Tuesday, May 12, Patrick McGuire will guide a bus tour, seminar and film dedicated to the strike. Patrick McGuire is a University of Winnipeg alumnus, a high-school history teacher at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate and a sessional instructor in the University of Manitoba's Labour Studies Program.

Sites on the tour organized by the University of Winnipeg Alumni Association will include the CPR station on Higgins Avenue, the Ukrainian Labour Temple, neighbourhoods in the North End, River Heights, Wolseley and City Hall. The tour will give participants an understanding of the context and historical significance of the strike and its lasting impact on Canadian society.

The 1919 Strike Revisited experience will begin with a reception and light dinner at 4:30 p.m. in Room 2D12 of the Duckworth Centre at the University of Winnipeg, with a film presentation beginning at 4:45. The guided bus tour will begin at 6:00 p.m. The cost, including the light dinner, is $15.

To register, contact the University of Winnipeg Alumni Affairs Office at 988-7118, or by e-mail at alumni@uwinnipeg.ca .
