MFL and CUPE Sponsoring Film Screenings
Winnipeg screenings of the film 'Amigo' are being sponsored by the MFL and CUPE. It tells the story of how when U.S. troops occupy his village, Rafael comes under pressure from an officer to help the Americans in their hunt for Filipino guerilla fighters. But Rafael's brother is the head of the local guerillas, and considers anyone who cooperates with the Americans to be a traitor. (More)
CUPW Wins Dispute Over Postal Arbitrator Issue
CUPW has notched up another win in its battle against the Harper government's postal worker back-to-work legislation of last summer. A federal court in Montreal has overturned Minister of Labour Lisa Raitt's appointment of retired judge Coulter Osbourne to arbitrate the labour dispute and ordered Raitt to appoint a bilingual arbitrator with labour relations experience. Osbourne is a unilingual judge with no previous labour experience. (More)
Labour Leaders Call On Premiers to Defend Healthcare
The leaders of the provincial and territorial Federations of Labour wrote an open letter to the country's premiers while they were meeting in Victoria during the week of January 16 calling on them to put forward a united front and stand up for Canada's universal healthcare system and the millions of Canadians who depend on it.
