Fire Fighter Memorial Deeply Moving

Manitoba Federation of Labour President Darlene Dziewit, staff from the MFL office, and a number of members of the MFL Executive Council and affiliates attended the Memorial Service for two fallen fire fighters on February 15.

Dziewit says that she found the service "deeply moving. I was struck by the sense of brother-and-sister hood that prevails throughout not just the fire fighters who were there from across North America, but also the other 'protectors' of the public who attended, such as paramedics, police and military personnel.

"While I would not presume to say that I understand how the fire fighters who were at the service felt to be memorializing their fallen colleagues, I can say with certainty that I felt grateful for the opportunity to show my support, along with the rest of the labour movement, and the public as a whole. I hope, with all my heart that we never have to have another service like the one on February 14, and that all fire fighters make it home safely every night."

The MFL will be making donations to the Fire Fighters Burn Fund, in the names of Captain Lessard and Captain Nichols. We encourage everyone else to do so, as well.
