Strikes Currently in Progress

CNIB Winnipeg
A strike/lockout by 19 Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) workers in Winnipeg began on March 15. The employer has announced that the services normally provided by the locked out workers will be delivered by CNIB employees from Brandon and Saskatchewan. The key issue is the employer's demand for a reduction in paid sick leave and long-term disability benefits even though the workers are already paid between $5 and $6 an hour less than workers at other non-profit organizations. The CNIB workers agreed to a wage freeze in the first year of a contract and to the employers wage proposal for the second year in an effort to appease the company. The CNIB rejected the union's suggestion to take the benefits issue to arbitration. Contract negotiations had been underway for almost a year before the strike/lockout began.

A solidarity picket in their support will be held at the CNIB offices at 1080 Portage Avenue this Thursday, March 18, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Please take part in this show of solidarity for these UFCW Local 832 members.
