Unanimous Labour Support in Thompson for NDP

Unions in Thompson, Manitoba, have voted unanimously to continue their support of the New Democratic Party, federally and provincially. The Thompson Labour Committee voted unanimously in mid-November in favour of a motion to maintain support and solidarity with the NDP, following a series of events, including the decision by former NDP Member of Parliament Bev Desjarlais to run as an independent in the next federal election.

"The NDP is the party of labour, and unions in our community have made it clear that we want to continue to have New Democrats represent us in Parliament and the Legislature," said Labour Committee President Wayne Levac. "We intend to campaign vigorously on behalf of the NDP in the upcoming federal election, no matter when it is held."

Unions represented on the Thompson Labour Committee include the United Steelworkers, United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Manitoba Government Employees' Union, Manitoba Teachers' Society, United Fire Fighters, Communications Energy and Paperworkers, Public Service Alliance of Canada, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Carpenters' Union, Hotel and Restaurant Employees and Bartenders Union, Canadian Union of Postal Workers, and Manitoba Nurses' Union.
