Unnecessary Risk for Firefighters

As if firefighters don't already have one of the most dangerous jobs around, Brandon City Council wants to make things even more dangerous for firefighters in that Manitoba City. The City of Brandon has decided that a new public safety building should be built on land that was previously used as a tannery, and a scrap yard. There was also an oil refinery on the site for nearly fifty years.

It's a very dirty, unhealthy site, but the city is not looking at cleaning up the mess. Rather, they are going to put the firefighters and other civic employees on the cleanest part of the site and leave the rest as is because it's cheaper than cleaning up the whole site!

The Brandon and District Labour Council is supporting the firefighters. It agrees that a public safety building should not be constructed on the proposed site. Overall the public have been sympathetic with the firefighters and any other employees who would have to work in the proposed new building. The public thinks its nuts for councillors to have voted in support of constructing on this toxic site, but council is still unwilling to revote on this issue.
