Stop Attacks on the Wheat Board

National Farmers Union urges federal government to leave Wheat Board alone.

Many people have watched in dismay as the Harper government has unsuccessfully attempted, over and over again, to dismantle the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB). Despite the Conservative Party's efforts to load the deck against the CWB by fair means and foul, the majority of Canadian farmers have demonstrated, at every opportunity, their continued support for the single desk marketing system. Farmers have refused to buy into the Harperites right wing, idealogically motivated plan to destroy the CWB.

Stewart Wells, the President of the National Farmers Union, is one of those people who have been dismayed by the government's efforts to destroy the single desk marketing system. In early January, he wrote a letter to the Federal Minister of Agriculture, Gerry Ritz, urging the Federal Conservatives to cease their attacks on the CWB.

In the letter, he tells the government to stop wasting money on legal steps to weaken or destroy the Wheat Board, and to reimburse farmers for the severance package required by the government’s firing of Adrian Measner, the president of the Wheat Board until he spoke out in favour of the single desk concept. He also urges the government to strongly defend the single desk marketing advantages of the CWB during World Trade Organization negotiations.
