Congratulations to New Ambassador to U.S.

New post announced day after Gary Doer announces resigning as Premier.

Manitoba Federation of Labour President Darlene Dziewit has offered her congratulations to Premier Gary Doer on his being chosen as the new Canadian ambassador to the U.S., one day after he announced his resignation as Manitoba's 20th premier.

Dziewit said, "Premier Doer has served as leader of the Manitoba NDP since 1988, and the last decade as truly the Premier of all the people of Manitoba. He rebuilt the Party since 1988 and, in many ways, rebuilt the province since 1999."

The MFL President said it would be a challenge to find another 10 year period during which the province enjoyed such prosperity and was in a position to fend off the worst effects of a global recession.

"Working people saw many positive advances with Premier Doer at the helm," Dziewit added, "including important improvements to legislation such as the Workplace Safety and Health Act, the Workers Compensation Act, the Employment Standards Code and the Pension Benefits Act. As well, the establishment of Centre Port, an energy development plan, an environmental policy and a carefully crafted economic policy framework has established a stable platform for future economic growth in our Province."

The MFL President said Premier Doer's ability to find compromise and agreement between divergent groups is his strong suit.

"This will serve him and all Canadians well when he begins his work as Canadian Ambassador to the United States. I can't imagine another person as qualified as he is to take on that challenge."

Manitoba union members wish Premier Doer and his family well in Washington. There'll always be a place for you around the barbeque here in Manitoba.
