Changes Ahead for MFL

Darlene Dziewit

- Darlene Dziewit, MFL President

Each December, as the old year wends its way to a close, we look back to try to gage how the year unfolded. Was it a good one? Not so good? Or, as we usually conclude, was it a little of both? 2008 was a year of extreme highs and lows.

In Canada there was an election, and despite the Liberal disarray, and a vault stuffed full of money from his friends, Stephen Harper failed to win a majority. The NDP did well, and for a very short while, it looked like Steve would have to learn to play well with others.

Then, for one brief week, it appeared as if the wheels had fallen off the Conservative wagon. Stephen Harper arrogantly played "chicken" with our economy and our elected parliament, seemingly forgetting his precarious minority status. The opposition, who combined, represents 62 per cent of the electorate, almost succeeded in taking back our country. Only the disgraceful action of our Prime Minister hiding behind the Governor General saved his job, for the time-being, at least.

In contrast to the spectacle of Stephen Harper's actions, politics in the United States took a decidedly positive turn, with the election of Barack Obama as President. For the millions of Americans who voted for him, Mr. Obama personifies hope for a better USA. He will replace the outgoing George Bush, an inept, right wing ideologue, who will certainly not be missed.

On the Manitoba front, while the economy remains top of mind, we continue to enjoy the financial stability due, in large part to our NDP Government, lead by Premier Gary Doer. Hopefully, we will better weather the ongoing economic storm better than elsewhere in the world.

Looking forward, the Manitoba Federation of Labour will see a number of changes in 2009. Brother Pete Walker, long time Health and Safety Coordinator is leaving his position at the MFL. Pete will retire in January, and will be taking on the job of full-time Workers Compensation Appeal Commissioner. Pete has fulfilled his position as an advocate for workers’ health and safety with unparalleled dedication, extreme competence and personal commitment to the cause. The staff, officers and executive council of the MFL wish Pete all the best in his new position. Manitoba workers could not ask for a better commissioner than Pete Walker.

2009 will also bring new leadership to the MFL. At the December Executive Council meeting, I announced that I would not be seeking a new term when my current one expires next October. I am looking forward to retiring, in order to pursue new endeavors. Life promises many more challenges and joys. I am truly looking forward to my new life and future. While I will be leaving the MFL, I will never leave our movement.

Finally, on behalf of the officers, staff, executive council and our 96,000 members and their families, I would like to wish you a peaceful and happy New Year.
