150 Attend H&S Conference

Jennifer Howard speaking to Health and Safety Conference delegates

Manitoba Labour Minister Jennifer Howard spoke to the opening plenary of the Health and Safety Conference.

The 30th Annual MFL Health and Safety Conference was held on April 14 and 15 at the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg with delegates in attendance from many of the unions affiliated with the Manitoba Federation of Labour. This year's conference theme, 'Union Solidarity - Protecting our Rights', recognized that even where progress has been made on health and safety for workers, trade unionists must remain vigilant to protect the gains that have been won, and to continue moving forward on safer workplaces. Conference speakers, panelists and workshops discussed the role of union education, the dangers of complacency, the need for political action and the critical importance of union solidarity.

Delegates to this year's conference participated in a wide range of workshops including:

  • working with the new provincial regulations on personal harassment and bullying;
  • protecting health and safety rights for vulnerable workers;
  • health and safety where employers are implementing lean production strategies;
  • current environmental issues in Manitoba, including water quality, climate change and the East Side; and
  • health and safety in federally regulated workplaces.

Post conference comments indicate those in attendance thought the H & S Conference was once again a great success.
