MFL Lobbying Pays Off on Westray Law Enforcement
The Westray law enables criminal prosecutions of employers responsible for workplace deaths. Passed nine years ago, the law has been largely unenforced. Only six charges have been laid across Canada. There have been no charges in Manitoba. But thanks in part to lobbying by the MFL, that may be about to change. (More)
MFL Makes Recommendations on Sunday Shopping
A submission has been provided by the MFL to the Province's consultation on a proposed expansion of Sunday shopping. In it, the MFL summarizes it's position by stating that it strongly believes the current compromise on Sunday shopping is reasonable and should be maintained. (Read the full brief)
Law Passed After Westray Disaster Not Enforced
When Parliament passed nine years ago the “Westray Bill.”, it said employers responsible for workplace deaths can face criminal charges, and if convicted, can be sentenced to time in prison. Without the political will to enforce it, the Westray law has remained a largely unenforced “paper tiger.” (More)
Robyn Benson elected PSAC National President
On May 4 at the PSAC National Convention, Robyn Benson was elected PSAC National President. Benson has been the Regional Executive Vice-President (REVP) for PSAC's Prairies region since 2000. As the REVP, Benson has been responsible for a wide range of activities in her region which covers Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. (More)
